Psychological help
Moving to a new country, starting a new job, and meeting new housemates can be quite a challenge. If you are not feeling well mentally, it may be advisable to seek treatment for your mental health issues in your home country before moving abroad. In your own country, help can be provided in your own language, while in the Netherlands it is very difficult to get the right help if you do not speak Dutch (or English).
As a migrant worker, you face new challenges and opportunities in the Netherlands. We understand that this can be accompanied by psychological issues and that it is important to find the right support for your mental well-being. Fortunately, there are various institutions and organizations in the Netherlands that specialize in providing psychological assistance to migrant workers, so that you can get the necessary support for your specific challenges.
Life in a new country can sometimes be difficult, with problems such as cultural adjustment, loneliness, stress, depression or anxiety. But you are not alone. Here are some institutions in the Netherlands where you can go for psychological help:
- MIND Korrelatie: MIND Korrelatie is there for you, regardless of your background. They offer telephone, online and chat support in various languages. At MIND Korrelatie, you can get advice on dealing with specific challenges that labour migrants may face.
- PsyQ: At PsyQ, they understand that everyone is unique and has different needs. They have locations throughout the country and offer specialised mental health care to people with a wide range of psychological problems. Whether you need individual therapy or group sessions, PsyQ can help you, including with specific challenges for labour migrants.
- GGZ: The Mental Health Care (GGZ) provides healthcare in the Netherlands. Many GGZs have specific programs or departments for migrant workers, where you can find support in various areas, including mental health. Contact the local GGZ to inquire about the available services in your region.
- Language and culture centres: In many cities and municipalities in the Netherlands you will find language and culture centres that focus on the integration and support of labour migrants. These centres often offer language lessons, workshops and psychological support to help you adapt to your new environment. On the language & integration page you can find some of these foundations.
This list is not exhaustive, but it gives you an idea of the resources available. Except for the Language and Culture Centers, most agencies are Dutch-oriented. If you do not speak Dutch (or English) it is not easy to find information or help through them. You can also contact General Practitioner (GP) for referrals to appropriate psychological counselors. Our Social Guidance team is also always ready to give you advice, make an appointment or support you as an interpreter.
Do you find it difficult to contact your GP or our Social Guidance team? There are also telephone helplines for direct contact with a volunteer or a professional counselor. They listen to you and give advice if you need it.
Always available, 7 days a week, day and night:
Luisterlijn: 088 0767 000 (English/Dutch)
113.nl (if you are thinking about suicide): 113 or toll-free 0800 0113 (English/Dutch)
Remember that it is important to be aware of the available resources and that there is no shame in seeking help. Psychological support can help you cope with the challenges you face, promote your mental well-being and create a healthy living environment during your stay in the Netherlands.
