Overview of migrant workers mediated by ABU and NBBU members

Commissioned by the ABU and NBBU, Conclusr conducted research in the fall of 2018 among ABU and NBBU members who provide labor migrants. It is a repeat of the research done in 2016. Among other things, it provides insight into the number of labor migrants mediated by ABU and NBBU members, the composition of this group and housing. A total of 225 of the 360 members who provided labor migrants in 2018 participated in the survey. The response rate is thus 62.5%, giving a representative picture of labor migrants mediated by members of the industry associations in 2018.

Number of migrant workers

In the period between June 1, 2017 and June 1, 2018, ABU and NBBU members provided more than 184,000 labor migrants. In the same period two years ago, this number was 119,598. Compared to two years ago, the number of ABU and NBBU members posting labor migrants increased by 60 (+20%). The increase in the number of labor migrants made available is also mainly explained by the fact that we are now in the midst of the boom (in the previous measurement in 2016 we were just emerging from the crisis).

Top 5 countries of origin

Most migrant workers are from Poland, Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria and Lithuania. The share of Poles made available decreased from 79.3% in 2016 to 72.8% in 2018. It is currently more difficult to attract Polish workers because of the growing economy in Poland. As a result, it is easier to get work in Poland and workers are staying in their countries to work there.

Top 6 sectors employing immigrant workers

The growth in the food industry is striking. This is partly because there has been a strong recovery in food production since the second half of 2017 thanks to growth in consumer spending.

  1. Logistics 29%
  2. Food industry 27%
  3. Horticulture 14%
  4. Metal industry 7%
  5. Agriculture 5%
  6. Transportation 4%

Distribution of immigrant workers by age

The largest age group of immigrant workers, at 36%, are between 24 and 30 years old. Nevertheless, the group of immigrant workers is aging slightly. In 2016, 40.4% of this group was older than 30. In 2018, this percentage rose to 44.9%.
